WEST BRANCH, Mich. (June
8, 2011) –
It’s coming on Friday, July 15, the Taco Bell Ogemaw Hills
Supermoto Spectacular! A through-the-downtown-streets race that
will be the one event you will surely want to attend this
summer, whether racer or spectator. Imagine athletes on
specialized motocross bikes with slick tires speeding by on main
street, and then heading down a hill side street into a dirt
section. Spectators enjoy it all for free. Racers can experience
the only street race in the United States this year.
The Taco Bell Ogemaw Hills
Supermoto Spectacular will start on the main street of downtown
West Branch, Michigan as part of the annual Ogemaw Hills Bike
Week. On a summer Friday evening, spectators will line the
sidewalks to watch the riders take off and back-it-in to the
first turn, down a short elevation side street and then up into
a parking lot where there will be a temporary dirt section.
Jumping through the dirt section with various combinations of
obstacles and then they’ll jump out onto the street again, up a
slight elevation, backing-it-in to the left down the other side
of main street and then a 180-degree turn to complete their lap.
“This event has been years in
the making,” said MISuperMoto.com’s Dave Duprey. “We’ve learned
from other street-based events, our own parking lot race and
track-based supermoto events to put on this show. Safety for
spectators and racers will be the first priority. We’re excited
to give riders from across the country an opportunity to compete
on the streets and have a unique racing story to share for years
to come. We’re stoked to bring supermoto downtown street race to
Michigan motorcycle fans and those from across the Midwest who
have likely never seen such a race. Yeah, they have seen enduro
riders start on the streets for the historic Jack Pine but not a
full-on street race. We want to thank the Ogemaw Hills Bike Week
committee and the West Branch government officials and business
community for supporting this event.”
Are you a supermoto rider or
want to participate in the nation’s only through-the-streets
race this year? Here’s how you can enter. There will be four
classes run: Beginner, Amateur, Vet 35+ and Pro. Beginner and
Amateur class riders must have earned points in the 2011
Michigan Supermoto Championship in order to enter the race. Vet
35+ riders who are amateur level must also have points in the
series. Pro class entrants qualify in one of two ways: you have
either earned points in the 2011 Michigan Supermoto Championship
Pro Class or you have held or currently hold a pro racing
license or status from a recognized sanctioning body such as
AMA, WERA, ESMRA and SupermotoUSA.
For current and former pro
riders, such as motocross, flat track and road racers, who want
to participate though do not have supermoto kit wheels and other
parts, MISuperMoto is in the process of coming up with viable
options so you may compete. Stay posted to www.misupermoto.com for
details.
Gates will open for racers at 4
p.m. on Friday, July 15. Spectators can enter the viewing areas
at 5 p.m.
The Taco Bell Ogemaw Hills
Supermoto Spectacular program will begin with two practice
sessions for each class and then the main events for each class.
The rider fee is $90 which includes race entry and pit gate fee.
Spectators are free. Riders who plan to compete in more than two
classes can enter the second class for $25. MISuperMoto members
get the second class for free. Points will be awarded for each
class towards the Michigan Supermoto Championship as well as
event points towards podium awards and a cash purse for the Pro
Class.
If you don’t already have points
earned in the 2011 Michigan Supermoto Championship, you can
enter the second round of the series at Auto City Speedway in
Clio, Mich. on Sunday, June 19. This is also a points-paying
round for the Canadian-American Supermoto Championship. The race
will be held rain or shine and all classes will be run including
two pro main events. Again, Beginner, Amateur and Vet 35+
Amateur-level riders must pre-qualify for the Taco Bell Ogemaw
Hills Supermoto Spectacular by having earned points in the
Michigan Supermoto Championship. Visit www.misupermoto.com to
pre-register for the June 19 race.
For the past five years,
MISuperMoto.com has held a supermoto race in a high school
parking lot during the annual Ogemaw Hills Bike Week. It was
time to take the event to the next level, switch the date from a
Thursday night to a Friday and slide it over to the streets. It
has been a shared effort between the promoter MISuperMoto.com,
the Ogemaw Hills Bike Week organizers including Kerry Klug, West
Branch Chamber of Commerce, West Branch City Council, West
Branch City Manager Tom Youatt, West Branch Fire Department,
West Branch Police Department, Ogemaw County Sheriff, and the
Michigan Department of Transportation.
“This is true guys, we have
everything in place to run a downtown street race,” added Duprey,
“We have crossed the “i’s” and dotted the “t’s. Come out on
Friday, July 15 and we’ll be ready to race on the streets! We
look forward to seeing you at our July 19 race at Auto City
which will be a great warm-up leading to the Taco Bell Ogemaw
Hills Supermoto Spectacular.”

Supermoto Spectacular is promoted by MISuperMoto.com with
