LINDEN, Mich. (January 18, 2012) –
Supermoto provides a unique display of motorcycle
competition that can be held in nearly any location
including downtown city streets. However, the
multi-discipline racing genre has not fully maximized that
opportunity to bring motorcycle racing to the public, that
is, until this year. Following a successful event, the Taco
Bell Ogemaw Hills Supermoto Spectacular, in July 2011
whereby nearly 3,000 fans attended the free event,
MISuperMoto.com is pleased to announce that it will promote
two urban-style, through-the-streets supermoto races this
season.
In addition to the second annual Ogemaw Hills Supermoto
Spectacular on Friday, July 20, 2012 in the downtown streets
of the northern Michigan town of West Branch, the City of
Wayne, Michigan will host the Michigan Avenue Speed Festival
on Saturday, June 9. Wayne is located in metro Detroit, just
25 minutes west of one of the nation’s largest cities. The
event will take place on a portion of the same Michigan
Avenue thoroughfare that runs from downtown Detroit all the
way through the southern part of Michigan and into downtown
Chicago.
The Michigan Avenue Speed Festival Hosted by the City of
Wayne will serve as the opening round of the 2012 Michigan
Supermoto Championship, while the Ogemaw Hills Supermoto
Spectacular will be round three. The Michigan Avenue Speed
Festival’s event details will be announced in the near
future with emphasis on a free festival-style atmosphere
with the marquee activity being motorcycle race on Michigan
Avenue to include dirt jumps. The race will include both
street sections and a large dirt section in a parking lot.
It is never-before-seen motorsports action in metro Detroit.
Special thanks to Wayne County Commissioner Kevin McNamara
(D-Canton) for encouraging the City of Wayne to host this
event.
The Ogemaw Hills Supermoto Spectacular will again be on the
downtown streets of West Branch, Michigan. The Ogemaw Hills
Bike Week Committee, City of West Branch, West Branch City
Council, West Branch Police Department, West Branch Chamber
of Commerce and Ogemaw County Sheriff were instrumental in
the success and safety of the 2011 event. More than 50
riders competed from as far away as Florida with the Pro
Class main event seeing 18 competitive athletes jumping and
speeding through the streets of downtown West Branch that
featured a 60-foot dirt tabletop. The business community and
city government were more than pleased with the event and
supports its return this summer.
Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan near Flint will host
two rounds of the 2012 Michigan Supermoto Championship on
June 24 and August 26. MISuperMoto has held events at this
auto racing facility during the past five years. The course
includes a large portion of the banked oval speedway, use of
an asphalt figure eight and a dirt section. Fans have prime
viewing from the grandstands.
“With the support of the entire community, the West Branch
downtown race became a successful event beyond our
expectations,” said Dave Duprey, owner of MISuperMoto.com.
“It has led us to focus on creating festival-themed free
community events with the draw being street-based motorcycle
racing. We are very happy to return to West Branch and grow
this event. We are pumped that the City of Wayne has stepped
on board to host the Michigan Avenue Speed Festival on June
9. We are creating a format that enables the athletes to
experience the uniqueness of urban-style supermoto and also
showcase beautiful Michigan cities.”
Duprey continued, “Additionally we are pleased to return to
Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan for two rounds of the
2012 Michigan Supermoto Championship. Mark your calendars
fans, and riders make your travel plans for June through
August. This will be an experience not had by many racers
and fans!”
To enhance fan excitement, each Michigan Supermoto
Championship event will feature two Pro Class main events
that pay points for each main toward the championship.
Therefore, there will essentially be eight points-paying
races for the Pro Class.
Michigan Supermoto Championship classes include beginner,
amateur and pro. The Beginner Class is for competitors who
have never raced supermoto. The Amateur Class is for racers
who have competed in supermoto before and are not experts or
have not previously finished at or near the top of the class
in past seasons. The Michigan Avenue Speed Festival and
Ogemaw Hills Supermoto Spectacular will require previous
motorcycle racing experience and this includes participants
of the Beginner Class. Both of these street-based events
will require pre-entry for competitors as well which will be
available on misupermoto.com before
spring. Series and event awards will be announced prior to
the first round.
All Michigan Supermoto Championship rounds are held rain or
shine. Events will run in all conditions.
