Hiemer now leads the S1 points standings with former S1 rival
Adrien Chareyre leading the S2 Championship. In the UEM series
Oliver Pope and Heino Meusburger lead the S3 and Open
class respectively.
KTM Italia Miglio’s Bernd Hiemer is now on top of the S1
Championship as previous leader Thierry Van Den Bosch of
Aprilia Off Road had a difficult Spanish GP.
The duo will be again in a dice for the red plate this weekend as
third placed in the Championship Thomas Chareyre sees
Matthew Winstanley and Ivan Lazzarini closing in.
Winstanley had a difficult time in Spain while Lazzarini took his
best career S1 result with first overall after winning both heats.
Spain was a positive round also for French countrymen Sylvain Bidart
and Jerome Giraudo, ending fifth and sixth respectively, as both
look at Olbia with more confidence in their bags.
Husqvarna CH Racing’s Adrien Chareyre is leading the S2 standings
for the first time in his young but successful career, including
also the 2007 S1 World Title.
Previous leader Davide Gozzini of TM Factory Racing will race at
home this weekend, enjoying the support from the many fans during
his quest for the red plate.
After the two youngsters, SuperMoto experts Attilio Pignotti and
Gerald Delepine are approaching the top of the Championship.
Pignotti is third in the standings with Delepine fourth after both
had a tough start to the season compromised by injuries.
Sardinia born Superider Lorenzo Pes will race this Grand Prix as a
wild card in the S2 class.
Oliver Pope retained the lead in the S3 class despite runner up
Olivier Scheen took victory in the latest round in Spain. Alessandro
Asnicar rounds off a very close top three as he led the standings
after round one in Torino.
Heino Meusburger is pulling away from the rest of the Open class
field, with runner up Alex Tognaccini being 15 points adrift.
Edgardo Borella rounds off the top three after his maiden overall
win in Spain.
THE RACE TRACK AND OLBIA
For the first time in history the World and European SuperMoto
series head to Olbia, another new venue which makes the 2008
calendar a very interesting one. The Grand Prix of Sardegna will be
held on Olbia’s industrial port, where an area of 30.000 square
metres has been dedicated to the course. The race track will have a
slide zone and a sky zone made of natural ground, with the latter
featuring also a demanding three wave section.
The city of Olbia is in the North East of the Italian Island
Sardinia and it is the key port in the Costa Smeralda area, which is
one of the most beautiful coasts in Italy. Olbia has about 50000
inhabitants and it has witnessed a solid development in the latest
30 years, with the tourism being the most fruitful business in the
area.
