Rally car
and motorcycle racers test course in Auto City Speedway adds all-new asphalt figure-eight Clio, Mich. (June 16, 2008) – With the inaugural MISuperMoto X only two months away, the organizers hosted two test sessions at Auto City Speedway in Clio, Mich. Three pro athletes from the AMA XTRM Supermoto Championship participated in a practice on May 28 and were the first to ride on a new infield asphalt section. On June 8, 11 rally car drivers tested the new course. The MISuperMoto X is on Saturday, August 16. “It’s all coming together especially after our test session last week,” said Dave Duprey, promoter of MISuperMoto X. “The supermoto racers and the rally car drivers are excited about the event and with their input we made slight improvements in the course. Our goal is to provide the fans an electrifying event they have never experienced in Michigan and challenge the racers.” On May 21, Auto City added a new figure-eight infield asphalt section that allowed for an expansion of the course layout with more right turns. The entire layout features a 17-degree banked turn in NASCAR turns one and two, an uphill to the infield section where both the supermoto racers and rally car drivers were getting air time, the aforementioned figure-eight, and a dirt portion with two tabletops, a double jump and a rhythm section. The supermoto racers will use the entire dirt section, while the rally cars may only use the two tabletops. Johnny Lewis who wears number 21 in the AMA series and participated in the May pro practice said, “The course layout is pretty sweet. They packed a lot of track in which should make for tight battles and the fans will be able to see most of the action. Looking forward to competing in the MISuperMoto X with hopefully many other AMA pros.” Due to recent storms, the rally cars could only take to the course’s asphalt portion on June 8. The cars were running 55-second laps with the fastest posting 53 seconds (the quickest bike time is 60 seconds). Car brands ranged from Subaru to Mitsubishi to Toyota, both all-wheel and two-wheel drive models. The session helped drivers choose the right tire combination and get valuable track time. The rally cars also participated in mock races with two cars at a time for one lap with a start-and-stop scenario. Rally car driver Paul Eddleston of Team Illuminata Motorsport added, “The track is awesome! We usually only get to run against the clock for time, but with the way Dave Duprey has this track set up, it’s a driver-versus-driver race. All of us just kept getting a bigger and bigger adrenalin boost lap after lap! I cannot wait until August 16.” Both the supermoto and rally car events will have a purse. The supermoto pro purse will be at least $2,500, while the top finishing amateurs will receive product compliments of Moose Racing. The rally car race, with one class, will also have at least a $2,000 purse. MISuperMoto will hold two more Test and Tune sessions at Auto City for supermoto riders on Sunday, June 15 and Sunday, July 20. Also on July 20, rally cars will practice in a separate session. Additional details to be announced.
Editors/Reporters: Photos are available from both sessions. Video is also available from the supermoto session. Media are invited to attend the July practice dates and participate in a ride-along.
